Starting Algebra 1 can feel overwhelming for many students. New concepts, unfamiliar classmates, and the pressure to perform can make the first week stressful. One way to ease this transition is by incorporating a creative, engaging activity that helps students introduce themselves while connecting to math. An About Me Poster designed specifically for Algebra 1 students offers a fun, interactive way to break the ice and build classroom community.
This blog post will guide you through using a the About Me Poster activity from Monarch Math!
Materials Needed for the Poster Activity
Before starting, gather these supplies to ensure a fun experience:
Download Poster Print-outs HERE!
Tape (for teacher to use)
Scissors for students
Printer (for teacher to print)
9 pages of printer paper per period poster
Pencil/pen for each student
Coloring supplies for students (Markers/Crayons/Color Pencils)
Step-by-Step Guide to Creating the About Me Poster
1. Introduce the Activity
Explain to students that they will create a poster that tells a little about themselves and experiences with math on the back, and a coloring activity on the front. Collectively, when we tape these together, we will make our unique poster for this class period.
Talking Point: We are expected to work together in this class all year, this poster is a reminder to look at the big picture and work with our partners for success.

2. Give out mini cards to every student.
Print and Cut out mini cards using Monarch Math About Me Period Posters. Make sure students have a pencil and coloring supplies. Students should do About me section on back and color on front:

3. Turn into the Teacher
Save these for two weeks as you get to know your students. When you feel like you no longer need the cards to reflect back on, start to put the poster together using the numbers on the back:

4. Share and Display
What a lovely poster to display, unique to every period! They will enjoy seeing how they come together to make a team. Reference this poster when they need reminders to work together to reach their goals.
